One of the questions that you need to ask when moving into a new apartment is how the landlord would like to accept the rent. Your lease will often tell you how to make the rental payments, though you can also clarify with the landlord and ask them about it if there are some concerns. You should also know about any of the fees that you will incur if you are late when it  is time to pay your rent.

Each landlord or property manager will have their own rules when it comes to getting paid and you need to make sure that you are on the same page when this happens. Most of the time, they like to be paid in one of three ways:

# Check: While carrying around your checkbook isn’t as common these days, you may find that some landlords want you to write them a check in order to handle your rent. If this is the method that your landlord or property manager would like to use, then you may want to order a few checks ahead of time to handle this.

# Wire transfer: This is one method that the landlord or property manager may want to rely on, but you should be aware that these often come with some additional fees. It can cost up to $35 for each transaction. This is a lot of extra money to come up with through the year. If the landlord does insist on this one, ask if they factored in the extra money for the wire transfer into the rent or see if they are willing to go with a different method.

# Property management portal: These are quickly becoming the normal way to pay your landlord. They are easy and allow for an auto-pay feature so that you do not end up paying the rent late at all. Many apartment complexes will have this available for their tenants and you just need to go through and set it up to work with your bank account. This can take a lot of stress off and is good for the tenant and for the landlord.
