There are many tenants who want to bring along a pet with them to their new apartment. They like the idea of having the pet with them as a furry friend when they come home and there are a lot of apartments that allow for this as well. However, if you do bring a pet into the apartment, you will often be asked to pay a pet deposit to help cover any potential damages that the pet may   cause while you live there.

How much is this pet deposit going to cost though? There are three main factors that will let you know how much the pet deposit is going to cost and these include:

# The state you want to live in: Every state has their own laws when it comes to pet deposits and fees. These regulations will often determine the amount that the landlord is able to charge you for having a pet and can put a limit on the amount as well. Some landlords will use the security deposit instead, while others do not allow that so check into this factor before moving in.

# Your landlord: Every landlord will have their policies in place when it comes to pets in the apartment. Within the confines of the rental laws for your state, landlords do have some freedom when deciding how much they want to charge for this deposit. Some properties will not allow a pet at all, others will have a certain amount set for the pet deposit and what they want to charge.

# How many pets you have and the breed: The more pets you want to bring to the apartment, the more potential there is that one or more of them will cause some damage to the property. This is going to cost you more in a pet deposit as well. And the breed of animal that you have can make a difference. A small dog or cat will generally cost less than a large breed and you can’t bring in an aggressive breed to the apartment at all.
