Moving out of one apartment and into your new home can take some time. There are a lot of things to organize and you have to think through every step of the move. When it is time to move out, ask that the landlord or property manager comes with you to do a final move-out inspection and a good walk-through of the premises. You need to do it with them. This gives you a chance to show off to the landlord how well you have taken care of the property and that you didn’t leave a lot of damages or a big mess behind. It can also be a good way for you to check that the landlord and you are on the same page when it comes to the condition of the property when you leave.

Before you go through and do this inspection though, take care of the apartment and get it in good shape. You should do a deep cleaning before you move out and fix anything minor that may have happened to the apartment while you lived there. The better you can take care of the apartment, the easier it is to do this inspection and the more likely that the landlord will give you the money back.

Get the apartment in good shape and then set up the inspection with them to have them take a look. Get it in writing what they found wrong with the apartment and what looked good. Some landlords will write you a check at that time for the amount of the security deposit they plan to give back. If not, that needs to get in writing as well to avoid problems.
