When you first moved into an apartment, you had to pay the landlord a security deposit. This is an amount, usually the same as a month’s rent, that you will pay to the landlord to hold until you move out. If you end up taking good care of the apartment and there isn’t a lot of damage around to worry about, then you will be able to get most, if not all, of that deposit back. But if you destroy the apartment and do not leave it in good working order, then you will lose that money and the  landlord can utilize it to get the apartment back in good shape.

As a tenant, you want to know the rules for when you will get the deposit back and when you will not. Most of the time, this is going to be listed out in your lease, so that is a good place to go check. If you take good care of your apartment while you live there, then the landlord will have to return the security deposit to you when it is time to move out.

Not cleaning the apartment well when it is time to move can be enough of a reason in some cases for the property manager to withhold some of the deposit. It may not be all of it, but will be some of it. A good rule of thumb is that outside of normal wear and tear that happens just from living there, the apartment needs to be left in the same condition as you saw it when you moved in if you would like to get the full deposit back.

Tenants who make a mess out of the apartment are not going to get the deposit back. The more work the landlord has to do, the less chance that you will be able to get it back. You should also consider walking through the apartment at the end of the lease and doing the inspection with the landlord so you know how much you will get back.
