There are many tenants who assume that when they find an apartment, they are stuck with the rental price that is set. If the market is tight and there is a limit on how many units are available for your needs in that market, then you may have to stick with the rental amount that is posted. But there are also plenty of situations where you may be able to talk to the landlord and negotiate a bit to get the price down and to make sure that it is more affordable for you to move in.

If you look at the price for the rental and you feel like there is some room there for you to negotiate with the landlord, then that is a good thing to do. You will need to negotiate at the beginning of the lease or when it is time to renew your lease again. If there are a number of problems with the unit that need to get updated or it has been sitting vacant for some time, then this is a sign that you could negotiate and get a better rate.

Approaching the landlord or the property manager about reducing the amount that you would pay on the property can seem a bit intimidating in the beginning. Just remember to be courteous and professional when you do it. Bring along some market research that supports the numbers that you would like to throw out and list out some of the work that the landlord needs to do to the apartment to make it worth the higher price. If you come with the research behind you, then the landlord is more willing to negotiate with you.

Keep in mind that the landlord may not be able or willing to reduce the rent that you owe at that time. But they may be willing to negotiate on a few other things that you want instead. You could ask for a lower security deposit or no parking fee, for example. These may not reduce the rent, but they can cut down on how much you spend to call the apartment home.
